The Highway – HOPE in His Way
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Jos 1:8
Teach me your way oh LORD and lead me in a plain path Ps 27:11
It is interesting how simple yet complex the above verses are because when God is leading us, ‘His’ way is not often the obvious way. In the first text, He tells us we ‘will make our way prosperous’ and in the second text David ask the Lord to ‘teach us your way’.
They sound contradictory…God’s way or my way.
But before we can talk about God’s ways we must talk about God’s thoughts.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Is 55: 8-9
God’s thoughts are different from ours…they are as different as the heavens are above the earth and the east is from the west. We know God thinks differently from us by just studying a few bible characters: in the life of Joseph, he takes Joseph out of his family and transports him to Egypt in the most unusual way via being left for dead in a pit and sold to merchants. He anoints David over his brethren to be king of Israel, David who looked like the most unlikely person to be a king. But after he’s anointed he goes back in the field looking after sheep. In the life of Moses, he delivers the children of Israel by way of the Red sea. In the New Testament, Jesus who come as a King is born in a manger and not a palace.
So, if HIS thoughts are so different then it transpires that HIS ways will also be different.
In Joshua 1, He tells Joshua to meditate in the scriptures, day and night. In meditating or medicating on the scriptures Joshua is saturating his mind in the thought of God, he is renewing his mind in the law of God and eradicating any thought that is not like God’s thinking. In the process of meditation Joshua thoughts are now the thinking of God.
Joshua 3: 4 ‘Joshua is told you have not walked this way before…’
Joshua can’t think like Moses…this is not the old way of wondering in the wilderness but a new way of possessing the territory which requires new thinking
As Joshua meditates the word of God. God’s thoughts become his thoughts and eventually God’s way becomes his way.
That is our cry each day….’Teach us your way’
But if you say this.....God is going to take you the non-scenic route
Ultimately meditating the word make God’s ways our way…
When Joshua has fully meditated the word of God he gets the strategy into getting into Jericho - it is the Highway. The Highway of God is not the usual way.
The Highway: walk around the wall for 6 days, and on 7th day walk around 7 times and give a victory shout. Joshua does exactly that. It is the highway of God, the high thinking of God. It is not a normal way.
Note, if Joshua had not saturated his mind and thoughts with the word he would have sabotage the strategy. His logical mind would have questioned the high thinking/high way of God… How can walking around a wall bring it down?
God’s way is the highway that we can hope in as it is the divine strategy.
